Its History and its Future

Turnip Brow and Mill Pond 1979

ROOTS

Why Turnip Brow ?   The enclosure of open fields lead to the formation of small fields with boundaries of walling or hedges .These smaller fields sometimes only an acre in size would be given Field Names often reflecting history and geography or crops grown . The Tithe Maps on the Cheshire Archives Website list 60 fields called Turnip  , sometimes Field , Yard or .... . No Turnip Brow though . This was because the big Estates  were not subject to the Tithe payments , so there are no details in the Tithe records of the Langley Hall Estate . However there is a an 1851 map of the whole of The L H Estate showing Turnip Brow . Brow or Hillside is a common part of field names in the Tithe Maps with over 300 Brows , So Turnips on the hillside with the old Farm building to the west  , the original Farm across the road no knocked down to build workers cottages . Next to Turnip Brow to the West is also  The Dye Works  built in 1837 in what once was the Walled Garden of Langley Hall . The U Bend of the river is all man made  with the Bollin originally running to the North of the Dye Works .This diversion had been created around 1780 to created a moated   Walled Garden some of which remains to this day . Interestingly Sutton had its own Turnip Field  a little passed Rossendale on the Right hand side .
